Every paragraph has one single, controlling idea that is expressed in its topic sentence, which is typically the first sentence of the paragraph. A paragraph is unified around this main idea, with the supporting sentences providing detail and discussion. The unifying idea in this paragraph is that the writer likes Sunday because it gives him/her a chance to be with his/her dad. The concluding sentence should sum up what you've discussed in the paragraph. The body of your essay is where you explain, describe or argue the topic you've chosen. This paragraph should put forth your second strongest argument supporting your thesis statement. Likewise, the third and fourth body paragraphs, like the first and second, will contain your third and fourth strongest arguments supporting your thesis statement. Each paragraph will address one main idea that supports the thesis statement. It can go up to max 2 pages if we work double-spaced. Short essays should consist of a maximum of 400 words. My introduction contains a thesis statement that states the focus and position of the essay. To give your essay a clear structure, it is important to make use of paragraphsand headings. This makes the content scannable and easy to digest. Each paragraph should be centered around just one argument or idea. The introduction is important both to grab the reader’s interest and to inform them of what will be covered in the essay. The introduction generally comprises 10â€"20% of the text. To learnhow to write an essay introduction, start by getting familiar with its most important goals. An essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an argument or narrative based on evidence, analysis and interpretation. Considering the lack of adequate teacher training, Lyse may be among a minority of students exposed to explicit instruction about writing. Nevertheless, many teachers who learn Dr. Hochman’s strategies become devotees. Eventually, Ms. Mbugua said, she decided to strike out on her own, and bought an account from an established writer with UvoCorp. In the passive voice, the action is completed by the subject (“The Beer Hall putsch was initiated by Hitler to seize control of the Bavarian government”). In fact, research finds that students exposed to a glut of such instruction perform worse on writing assessments. The active voice also helps prevent sentences from becoming long, wordy and unclear. One effective way to do this is with a brief summary of ‘what happened next’. For example, an essay discussing Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 might close with a couple of sentences about how he consolidated and strengthened his power in . A paragraph should focus on one topic or issue only â€" but it should contain a thorough exploration of that topic or issue. Start by providing a little context, then address the question, articulate your contention and indicate what direction your essay will take. An essay using this contention would then go on to explain and justify these statements in greater detail. It will also support the contention with argument and evidence. Your research should take shape from here, guided by the essay question and your own planning. Identify terms or concepts you do not know and find out what they mean.

In the short story, â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, there is a woman who’s physician husband, John, rented a house for the summer and puts her in an upstairs room so she can recover from temporary nervous depression. John believes if she does not strain herself with work she will rest up and be back to her normal, healthy self. His wife did not agree with this tactic and although she was not happy in the room she was forced to stay in all day, she stayed. She noticed her temper had gotten much worse with John as time went on and she struggled to maintain her happiness being stuck in the room with the ugly yellow wall paper. Research Paper Diabetes - 2773 Words

Caroline SOC 005 Dr November 15th, 2011 Diabetes in the U.S. Diabetes is a disease rapidly increasing throughout the world today, and it is often referred to as the world’s modern epidemic. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) there were 171 million people suffering from diabetes worldwide in 2000. They are expecting this number to be doubled by year 2050 with 366 million diagnosed people. The organization’s most recent â€Å"calculations indicate that worldwide almost 3 million deaths per year are attributable to diabetes† (World Health Organization). It is clear that diabetes is a huge problem in the world, and a research called â€Å"The burden of Mortality Attributable to Diabetes: Realistic estimates for the year 2000†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦Being poor leads to several other factors that affects the health and wellbeing of the poor. They are unable to have a sufficient diet, they live in bad areas, they do not have the extra money to spend on for instance a gym membership, and they might have so many worries that their health is not their number one priority. Being poor also limits the health care you can receive, as the poor cannot afford health insurance. We have to identify the poor in order to discuss who are more exposed to the problems with diabetes and obesity, and two major characteristics of the poor are that they are often racial minorities, and uneducated. First of all, let us focus on the part of living in a bad area and these mostly consist of poor people, who I already identified as, among others, racial minorities. As we saw in the episode â€Å"Place Matters†, from the series â€Å"Unnatural Causes†, where you live has a huge affect on both mental and physical health. One major reason for this is that in bad neighborhoods there are almost no fresh foods available to the residents. Discipline in School and at Home free essay sample

Discipline in school and at home In its original sense,  discipline  is systematic instruction given to  disciples  to train them as students in a craft or trade, or any other activity which they are supposed to perform, or to follow a particular  code of conduct  or order. Often, the phrase to discipline carries a negative connotation. This is because enforcement of order – that is, ensuring instructions are carried out – is often regulated through  punishment. Discipline is the assertion of willpower over more base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with  self control. Self-discipline is to some extent a substitute for  motivation, when one uses reason to determine the best course of action that opposes ones desires. Virtuous behavior is when ones motivations are aligned with ones reasoned aims: to do what one knows is best and to do it gladly. Continent behavior, on the other hand, is when one does what one knows is best, but must do it by opposing ones motivations. We will write a custom essay sample on Discipline in School and at Home or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Moving from continent to virtuous behavior requires training and some self-discipline. * Self-discipline: Self-discipline can be defined as the ability to motivate oneself in spite of a negative emotional state. Qualities associated with self-discipline include willpower, hard work, and persistence. Self-discipline is the product of persisted willpower. Whereas willpower is the strength and ability to carry out a certain task, self-discipline is the ability to use it routinely and even automatically. An analogy for the relationship between the two might be defined as follows: Where willpower is the muscle, self-discipline is the structured thought that controls that muscle. In most cultures, it has been noted that self-discipline is the ultimate path towards success. There are TWO ways of discipline: * Positive Discipline. Negative Discipline. * Positive Discipline: Positive discipline is more an attitude and atmosphere than an action. It is a tool, not a weapon. It is an expression of love, not anger. Discipline in the true biblical sense is positive and encouragingin fact, its even proof of love. Positive Discipline (or PD) is a discipline model used by schools that focuses on the positive points of behavior, based on the idea that there are no bad children, just good and bad behaviors. You can teach and reinforce the good behaviors while weaning the bad behaviors without hurting the child verbally or physically. Positive discipline includes a number of different techniques that, used in combination, can lead to a more effective way to manage groups of students. Some of these are listed below. Positive discipline contrasts with negative discipline. Negative discipline may involve angry, destructive, or violent responses to inappropriate behavior. In the terms used by psychology research, positive discipline uses the full range of reinforcement and punishment options: * Positive reinforcement, such as complimenting a good effort. * Negative reinforcement, such as ignoring requests made in a whining tone of voice. Positive punishment, such as requiring a child to clean up a mess he made. * Negative punishment, such as removing a privilege in response to poor behavior. * Five criteria There are 5 criteria for effective positive discipline: * Helps children feel a sense of connection. (Belonging and significance) * Is mutually respectful and encouraging. (Kind and firm at the same time. ) * Is effective long-term. (Considers what the child is thinking, feeling, learning, and deciding about himself and his world – and what to do in the future to survive or to thrive.

The Etching free essay sample

A prolific writer, he published thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories, two plays and three volumes of memoirs. His skill at scene-setting, his vivid plots, his high profile as a lecturer and his driving ambition brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. A best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s, his works have been neglected since his death. The title of the story tells us about the main object in it. The etching became a cause to breaking a marriage. It’s its direct meaning. Indirect one shows that just a picture can be a motive to separating of married couple that are too different to be together. The writer gives us a realistic presentation of impossibility of two different people living together and building some kind of relationship even of long one. It’s too difficult to live with a man or a woman whom you don’t love and it’s impossible to keep a man next to you because â€Å"You can take a horse to the water, but you can’t make him drink. We will write a custom essay sample on The Etching or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page † The text represents a narration about a married couple of the Gabriels. Florence Gabriel was too  «bossy », possessive to her husband Billy. She tried to take control over her husband, to prevent him making his own decisions. He simply adored her. One day he saw the etching which struck him so much and he bought it without his wife’s permission. It irritated her greatly. Being furiously, she took one of the etching and thorn it into a hundred pieces. At the end of the story the family that seemed to be happy was ruined. Ignoring France’s tears and request’s he left her forever. The author gives us a detailed description of characters. Mr. Gabriel was a large, four-square genial red-faced, grey-haired woman with bright blue eyes and a hearty laugh. But she was too  «bossy » to her husband. While reading we can understand she did it because she was afraid of loosing him. Also that woman was very economical. I suppose, it was the main cause of her being against the hobby of her husband. Billy was shy and clumsy in company, but that was partly because Mrs. Gabriel made him so. He was very unpractical and dreamy person and he managed to reveal himself only after getting his hobby. The language of the story is full of descriptions and remarkable notices about characters. The author often uses adjectives and it makes the language brighter. The main ideas of the story, to my mind, is that we can’t keep a person next to us if he or she doesn’t love you. Another one is that people can for all their life be shy until they find the thing that is support for them and only then they reveal themselves. I like this instructive text, because it’s easy to read, but contains deep ideas. It shows us how one thing, one occasion, one little quarrel and situation could completely change a person. I think that the main reason of this is Mrs. Gabriel. The Etching just help Billy to understand the situation and the depth of feelings in his relationships.

Project Planning in Teams

Project Planning in Teams Free Online Research Papers Project planning in teams is being used more and more each day. Teams are now being incorporated in schools and the workforce. There has been success in using teams and that has helped for it to be used more and more. The key role of teams is for project planning and having a good outcome. The success of using teams for all of the project planning has helped companies and schools use the skills people have to meet production deadlines. There are many ways of project planning in teams but we will look at only a few and how they are helpful to reaching success. Definition of Project Planning in Teams Project planning in teams can also be defined as â€Å"Project management is the coordination of your work and that of others such that organizational objectives can be achieved while meeting time, budget, and quality standards of expectations.† as mentioned in The McGraw-Hill Companies, DeJanesz-Dowd-Schmeider, (2001, p 350). Project planning in teams is successful if it is planed accordingly and considering any roadblocks to meet deadlines. When working project planning in teams good organization and communication is important so everyone is working towards the same goal. Consider the knowledge, abilities and skills when forming the teams so the planning of the project can be easier. Team managers and members need to discuss the project before planning how to work it. Using the technology to keep in touch and make sure the project is working and the deadlines are being met.Project planning in teams is based on communication and organization for a good outcome. Schools and companies have started to use teams for special projects; usually leaving the planning of the project to a team leader. Project planning in teams has become a great tool in schools and workforce as indicated in The McGraw-Hill Companies, DeJanesz-Dowd-Schmeider, (2001, p 351). Both schools and companies have learned that people are more productive and beneficial in teams during project planning. When initiating project planning in teams make sure you know the information and the goals to achieve it. Members of project planning in teams When planning a project in teams we have to consider the main members and analyze how to form the team so we can complete the project successfully. Knowing all of the information of the project will help you come up with a good team. Team members need to communicate effectively so there can be, as close as possible, a perfect team. The team is composed by two key members which is the team manger and the rest of the team members. These members need to posses the ability to work together. Team manager The team manager is an important role in the project planning since they coordinate all aspects of the teams such as, determine the beginning of the project and organize the rules for it. When considering team members to be managers we should consider the following as indicated by Garris, Leah B (2007) â€Å"Good communication and listening skills, with the ability to ask open-ended questions.†. Team managers need to be good organizers so they have all the material to begin the project planning and be able to explain it to all of the other team members. The managers should have a people person personality since they will sometimes serve as mediators. A good team manger is the beginning to any perfect project. Team members A good team consists of people that are willing to communicate and work well with others. Good team members as indicated in the study conducted by Weems-Landingham, Velvet (2004), â€Å"perceived abilities to plan and coordinate activities, tasks, and information† (Ch 2). As part of a team the members need to follow the project plan and communicate so they can all be working towards the same objective. The first main ability a team member should have is good communication skills so they can communicate well with the other members. If a team member is not willing to do their part in the project planning the outcome will not be successful (Weems-Landingham, Velvet, 2004). Steps for Project Planning in Teams There are various steps in project planning that are beneficial when working in teams. Two of these steps have been known to be good tools for success in projects. The way these steps are applied are different but the over all outcome that the teams are striving for is to have a successful project. Some companies are using these steps to plan there projects. Knowing the steps of pre-project and the after-project that helps us work more efficiently and helps us review the outcome of the project. Pre-Project planning This step is important because it helps you gather all of the information you need to have when project planning in teams. Some of the information that is needed for the team to begin their work is budgeting, scheduling, financing and decision making; all members need to know the specifics to have a good outcome. The one process that is essential is backscheduling and involves looking backwards from target date, beginning with your goal or objective and then plotting out the means to achieve it as mentioned in The McGraw-Hill Companies, DeJanesz-Dowd-Schmeider, (2001, p 355). Pre-projecting is helpful if you do not procrastinate. The team needs to be organized and stay in communication constantly so there is success. After Project planning. This step is good since it helps you determine if the steps taken helped the team reach the goal in a timely manner and with in the guidelines that were implemented. This is also a good tool to help you avoid using steps that were not beneficial and drifted the team off target. This is also a good way to determine if the rules that were used cause conflicts with in the team members. This helps determine if there was a lack of or inadequate measurement of the project management process, with a focus on the measurement of outcomes eliminat[ing] the capability of the project team to make timely and cost-effective midcourse corrections as indicated in the study of Uday-Riley, Marcey (2006). This will help determine where the weakness and attributes of the team were. Different Ways of Project Planning in teams With the advances of technology today we now have two ways of project planning in teams which consist in using the traditional way and the virtual way. Both in traditional and virtual ways the communication among team members is essential. Both the traditional way and the virtual way indicates that the overall result is to have success in every project planning tasks that is given to the teams. Whether using the traditional or virtual way the team members should follow the five stages of Tuckman’s model as explained in The McGraw-Hill Companies, Kreinter-Kinicki (2003 Ch12 P 414) which are Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning so any changes done during the project’s duration can run smoothly. Traditional Way This way is used when team members have met and work directly work with each other. Schools that use the method of teaming students use this way in order for project planning to be discuss in the daily and weekly events. Small companies us the traditional way so members can communicate openly during meeting. The element this way brings is that it is a more personal way of planning and performing projects as a team. By meeting and interacting directly and indirectly with each other the team members seem to be more willing to incorporate the Tuckman’s model in project planning. Virtual Way This way is the way some companies and schools use to analyze the planning of a project before asking a team to use it. Some ways of using the virtual way is to request surveys and questionnaires for project planning in teams. Large corporations use this method when opening branches in other cities and counties. These companies are using what they have learned has worked from their main branch to start the project planning in any other. In the study by Delisle, Connie Louise Gail (2002) said that â€Å"Virtual ways of organizing and working continue to generate interest globally in academic and business communities†(p7). An example of virtual way being implemented is when you work for a large company you can be part of a team but never meet. Conclusion In order for success to happen in project planning in teams the main key is to maintain good communication always. Planning the project well consist of having a good team leader and team members, knowing the project and knowing if surveys and questionnaires have been done on the project presented. Having team members that know what the project consist of will be more determine to work towards the same goal and meet deadlines. Team members need to stay organized and focus when planning projects. Project planning in teams have become a way of life. References The McGraw-Hill Companies, 2001. Project Management (Chapter 17).
